RIBA Interactive Media Table

The RIBA commissioned 401 to create an interactive digital centrepiece for the recently opened RIBA North in Liverpool. An installation for visitors to learn about the past, present and future of Liverpool's built environment and urban design strategy.

The interactive digital table works in tandem with a three-dimensional physical model of the city's central urban core. Digital and physical content work together to tell a variety of stories about Liverpool and the surrounding area.

The installation effectively acts as both an educational and professional tool. It can be used by developers, architects, planners and students to host public consultations, anticipate the impact of future development and encourage dialogue around best practice in urban design.

Plug+Play developed the software for this installation consisting of three applications: the Table, the Wall Screen, and an iPad Controller. The interactive table played back content at 5760 x 3240 making use of the HAP codec for performance, and all applications used WebSockets to communicate. A key feature of this project was that new content and menus could be created simply by adding files to a Dropbox folder.
